Holiday Eats
Did you know that if you eat just 300 additional calories between now and New Year’s Day you are apt to gain at least five pounds of
unwanted fat? (I bet a spare tire for your middle isn’t on your Christmas list.) In addition to added weight, indulging in sugary treats can also weaken
your immune system.
How can you prevent holiday weight gain? It’s easy, really. Make a point of staying on the same healthy diet we have been talking about all year round. I
hope you aren’t tired of hearing it because I am not tired of saying it. Fruits, vegetables, 100% whole grains— and choose white if you eat meat. And don’t
forget to drink those eight to ten eight-ounce glasses of water every day.
Did you know that if you drink a glass of water before you sit down to eat a meal, your tummy will feel fuller quicker? Drinking water instead of soda pop
or sugary juice drinks can cut hundreds of calories off your daily calorie consumption. And, when you feel hungry between meals, drink a glass of water
instead. If you are still hungry 20 minutes later, enjoy a healthy snack—a piece of fruit, some carrots and celery, a handful of nuts or some cubes of low
fat cheese.
The banquet’s in the first bite
We all know that if you vow not to eat any holiday treats you are setting yourself up for failure. Enjoy a little. Have one cookie, a half piece of pie, one
moderate helping of mashed potatoes and gravy. And then stop. Put your fork down on the table between bites so you eat more slowly.
Another trick, take smaller portions, skip any fattening dishes that you aren’t absolutely crazy about and don’t have seconds. It takes your stomach 20
minutes to signal your brain that you are full. After eating one plate full of small portions, wait 20 minutes and voila! You’ll find you’re well satisfied.
Get up and go brush your teeth. That will help you to not eat any more.
Don’t forget to exercise! I know how busy the holidays can be, especially if you are taking care of children or other family members. Take care of yourself
first—exercise—and you will be better able to meet all the demands of the busy holiday season.
Don’t despair!
What if you do put on a few extra pounds? ItWorks Ultimate Thermofit does what other products try to do. It effectively increases the rate of cellular
thermogenesis by boosting metabolism and stimulating circulation naturally with its unique cayenne pepper extract, Capsimax. In addition, another of its
ingredients, raspberry ketones, have been shown by researchers to reduce accumulation of fat at the cellular level. Some researchers have concluded that
these ketones also increase the release of energizing brain neurotransmitters.

A Change of Season
I love watching the changing colors of autumn. The trouble is that this time of year there’s not always a lot of extra time to sit and enjoy the view. The kids’ school activities are in full swing. Summer vacation is a thing of the past. And, before we know it, the holidays and all those activities will be upon us.
When things get busy it’s so easy to take what seems to be the easy way out. Fast food beckons from every street corner. Convenience foods holler at us from the grocery aisle shelves and freezer sections. Our days fill up with work, appointments and activities so we leave ourselves little time to exercise.
Yes, these options seem like the easy way out—but they are not. The time you save today by choosing these options will—not maybe—but definitely will be lost at some point. Fast foods, sugary foods and junk foods do not provide your body the nourishment it needs. In addition, the chemical additives in these foods can actually make you sick. And, when you choose not to exercise, you don’t just grow a little paunch; you actually deny your immune system the activity it needs to keep on its toes.
Yes, fall is a busy time. It’s also the time when colds and flu attack. However, if you and your family choose to eat healthy and get your exercise, you’ll be ahead of the game. Even if you do come down with a bug, you’ll find that your body can throw it off more efficiently. That means less missed school, less missed work and less money spent on doctor visits and medicines.
You and your family will also be ahead of the game when it comes to mental acuity. The same healthy routine—good foods and exercise—keeps the mind sharp and better able to focus on the tasks at hand. That means the kids do better in school—and you do better on the job.
What do I mean when I say “good food?” Fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, 100% whole grains, lean meats, nuts and seeds and for a beverage of choice, eight to ten times a day, a large glass of pure water. And, to make sure you and your family are getting all the vitamins and minerals that human bodies require, include It Works!’s It’s Vital™ multi-vitamin and mineral supplement in your diet every day. It’s Vital™ gives your body the super-nutrient building blocks you need to achieve and maintain optimum health throughout the cold and flu season.
Vital contains the immune boosting minerals zinc, calcium and magnesium in forms that are well absorbed and extremely effective. Your body needs the vitamin C boost found in It’s Vital™ to combat all the stress. Keeping the body free from infections requires an enormous amount of additional vitamins and minerals, all of which are found in your daily dose of It’s Vital™.

God's Good Greens
I love summer’s salad days—the time when our local farms and gardens are bursting with greens like kale, chard, lettuce and mustard. It’s the perfect time to get into the habit of making greens a part of your daily diet.
Did you know that on average, Americans eat green leafy vegetables only once or twice a week? And, that probably means a dried up iceberg lettuce salad topped with gobs of unhealthy salad dressing. With greens being recognized as one of the most inexpensive sources of so many vital nutrients, this is truly sad news.
What exactly do God’s good greens do for you? Well, being low in calories, leafy vegetables help you maintain idea weight, for one. They also reduce risks of cancer, type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease because they are low in fat, high in fiber and rich in nutrients like folic acid, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, lutein, beta-cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, vitamin K, quercitin, beta-carotene and more.
The magnesium in greens helps folks with type 2 diabetes. The vitamin K helps ensure bone health. One study found that the risk of hip fracture in middle-aged women decreased 45% when they ate one or more servings of leafy greens every day! Greens also boost immune function (a factor in allergies) and ensure eye health.
Leafy greens offer a rainbow of flavors: sweet, bitter, peppery and earthy. Collards, Swiss chard, bok choy, and spinach have a mild taste while arugula, mizuna and mustard greens are excitingly spicy. Whatever kinds of greens you choose, look for crisp leaves with a fresh vibrant green color--the darker the color, the richer the nutritional value.
While no substitute for God’s good greens, ItWorks Dr. Don's Daily Health Pac features all the nutrients your body needs on a daily basis for detoxification and complete balancing of your immune system. If you are not eating two to three fruit, four to six vegetable and five to 11 whole grain servings every day(grown organically and locally and not picked until ripe, your body needs supplemental nutrients.
These specific vitamins, minerals and co-factors are all supplied in Dr. Don's Daily Health Pac. Why take a chance on being deficient? Cover all the bases! Give your body everything it needs to get and stay healthy naturally.

Get to Bed on Time!
Rest time is restoration time, and these days most of us have no idea what it’s like to wake up feeling restored after a proper night’s rest. Actuarial figures from insurance companies show that people who go longer than seven days on five hours or fewer of sleep a night increase their risk of death from all causes by 700 percent! It has also been shown that people who sleep fewer than six hours a night don’t live as long as people who sleep seven or more hours. Not getting sufficient rest can literally kill you.
Our bodies require between six and eight hours of good rest every night, and consistency and timing make a world of difference in how you feel and how you function when you wake up in the morning. Studies show that the hours from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. are the most healing, restorative hours to rest—don’t miss those hours of sleep. From 10 p.m. until midnight your sleep is four times more restorative than the hours you sleep after midnight, so try especially hard not to miss those hours.
It’s worth noting that your stomach needs good rest every night too. If you get plenty of sleep but still wake up tired, maybe you aren’t letting your stomach rest when you rest. Have you ever noticed that eating a big meal right before bedtime can disturb your rest or even keep you awake at night? Don’t load up your stomach before bed so that it has to keep working hard all night through to digest your late-night snacks. Instead, follow the maxim “Eat like a king at breakfast, a prince at lunch, and a pauper at dinner.” It will do your stomach and your sleep habits a world of good.
Rest and relaxation (R&R)
Some people feel guilty if they take time for R & R, whether that means getting enough sleep at night or allowing for a day of rest on the weekends. Stress, financial worries, or the hectic pace of modern life so overwhelms them that they cannot slow down enough to let their bodies (not to mention their minds and spirits) be restored.
God felt so strongly about R & R that He declared the Sabbath holy and decreed, “Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death” (Exodus 31:15). These days, if that law were in effect we’d all be dead. However, it illustrates how crucial R & R is. If God Himself took time for it and made it law, don’t you think we ought to make it a priority as well? We’ll actually be more productive body, mind, and spirit if we are properly rested.
A good night’s sleep
Do the worries, cares and stress of the day keep you lying in bed awake? ItWorks Confianza™ is a naturally based supplement that increases your energy levels while reducing stress and fatigue. Take a couple before bed to calm those alarming thoughts. Its special blend of herbs was developed to provide a safe way to enhance your ability to cope with a stressful life.

You Can't Go Wrong with White Meat
It’s true that many people choose to be vegetarians rather than eating meat, It’s also true that we were not originally designed to be meat eaters. The Bible’s first chapter designates fruits, vegetables and whole grains as our food. However, that doesn’t mean that we have to eat an exclusively vegetarian diet.
White bread is unhealthy, but white meat is just the opposite. If you choose to eat meat—and most of us do—then choose white. At our house we like fish, chicken, and turkey. Fish is packed with nutrition and with the good fats and oils that lubricate your joints and boost your immune system and brain function.
Fish, chicken and turkey are lower in fat. Excess fat is where the toxins accumulate. For that reason, by the way, meat preparation is nearly as important as meat choice. If you leave on the skin, where most of the fat is, and fry the meat, you’ve greatly increased the fat content. Lean, skinless cuts are the way to go!
What about beef? An occasional meal of red meat is all right—lean, hormone-free beef can actually be healthier for you than cage-raised chicken with the skin left on. But beef still shouldn’t be part of every main meal. If you were brought up on beef, as many of us were, try to limit your beef consumption to once a week. Once every two weeks is even better, and once you’re used to that, try once a month. That may seem extreme in our beef-crazed culture, but when you’re eating a healthy, tasty variety of other meats, you won’t be asking “Where’s the beef?” nearly as often as you think.
Pork is definitely not “the other white meat.” Pigs eat anything and everything, so they accumulate astronomic levels of toxins in their tissues. Pork meat actually rots from the inside out, not the outside in!
Limiting your overall consumption of meat and also dairy products is a good idea anyway. Believe it or not, 60 percent of all the antibiotics used in the United States are given to animals. That means when you eat a lot of meat and dairy products, you’re getting way more than you bargained for.
Another reason to avoid fatty meat, fatty whole-fat dairy products and empty carbohydrates is unhealthy weight gain. And, if you are trying to lose weight and need a little boost, I recommend It Works Advanced Formula Fat Fighter with Carb Inhibitors. Fat Fighter is an effortless way to decrease up to one third of the fat absorbed from your highest fat meal. The all natural cactus fiber literally soaks up unwanted fat and keeps it from being taken into your body. It’s actually most effective taken 15 minutes to 60 minutes AFTER the meal ... so it's not too late when you blow it on the wrong foods or your favorite desert. Fat Fighter also contains some of the world's best "foods for your pancreas" to help the body balance blood sugar and fight diabetes and pre-diabetes.

Vegetables Keep You Fresh
Vegetables are incredible! We’ve found that the easiest way to get our family to eat vegetables every day is to make the veggies attractive and available. My mom is good at cutting up veggies and setting them out to just be available for grabbing. If you’ll cut up some celery, carrots, cherry tomatoes, and even broccoli and cauliflower into small, snack-sized pieces, you’ll be amazed at how fast those veggies will disappear from the tray when you leave it sitting out on your counter.
Susan likes to start the day with our kids by letting them make fruit and vegetable faces on paper plates. The faces change every day depending on what’s in the refrigerator, and it’s a great way to expose the kids to different foods. Cucumber eyes look great with carrot pupils, green or red peppers make perfect mouths, celery works well for ears, and an almond or walnut makes a nice nose. Don’t forget to slice some fruit in thin strands or sticks for the hair!
Vegetables give you nutrients you can’t get anywhere else. Did you know cabbage is the only known food source of vitamin Q? Did you even know about vitamin Q? Eat your cabbage and you’ll get it. Cabbage, broccoli, carrots, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower are some of the cruciferous vegetables, which are major cancer fighters. They’re full of vitamins A, C, and E, the trace mineral selenium, antioxidants, and anti-aging nutrients. What a lineup! You can’t win good health without them.
When you compare the one-fourth of the U.S. population who eat the fewest fruits and vegetables to the one-fourth who eat the most fruits and vegetables, you’ll find that the one-fourth who eat the fewest have double the cancer rate of those who eat the most. Double the cancer rate! That’s a shocking statistic!
Which group would you prefer to be in? I don’t know about you, but I know which group my family and I prefer to join. We’re eating our fruits and vegetables every day. We enjoy them, and so will you with a little creativity and training of your palate. You’ll be much healthier as a result, too.
Renewing your health and vitality by making vegetables a major part of your diet can add energy to your days and years to your life. If you need a little more help, try ItWorks New You 3.0. This one-of-a-kind longevity formula is designed to stimulate and support the production and release of the body's own human growth hormone. New You 3.0 aids in building lean muscle mass, enhances exercise endurance and helps provide better sleep and memory.
You can train yourself and your kids to crave fresh fruits and veggies in place of sweet and salty man-made junk foods with no nutritive value. Start today! Dump the junk and fill your fridge with God-made, natural whole foods—including plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Learn to Relax!
Millions of people run around in a highly stressed state day after day. Our modern lifestyles set us up to live that way, and before long we think it’s normal—until it negatively affects our health.
Stress is the number one enemy of the immune system. By stress I don’t mean having issues with your boss or your spouse. Those are stressors. Stress is your body’s reaction to these stressors.
You have a sympathetic nervous system and a parasympathetic nervous system. The latter is the “resting system” that slows your heart rate and helps you relax. The former, the sympathetic nervous system, governs your fight-or-flight reactions to stressors. It can stress your body by increasing your heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, nutritional needs, and hormonal activity, all in response to some stimuli or stressor.
The body goes on red alert when your fight-or-flight system kicks in. It’s good to have a bodily system set up to help you survive, and we all need that in certain situations. However, you were never designed to run on continual red alert.
When you’re stressed, your body doesn’t think it has time to digest your food properly, so you don’t get all the nutrition you need. Your immune system is neglected because your body is thinking about survival.
No one was designed to continually undergo those kinds of bodily reactions. Have you ever heard the saying “you can’t live on adrenaline”? It’s true. Continual stress means a continual adrenaline rush that puts your health into a downhill slide.
When you wake up on the run, run to work, run to the store, run through the drive-through and then plop down in front of the TV the rest of night, you put yourself in s constant state of stress. (Watching TV does nothing to relieve physical stress.)
How can you learn to relax? First, stay in the present moment. Don’t let your thoughts race ahead to the next problem—just concentrate on the now. Second, learn how to do deep breathing. Practice it throughout your day and whenever you feel particularly stressed. Third, make time to really relax—write it in your planner or on your calendar. Fourth, exercise! Exercise is a surefire way to relieve the physical presence of stress. Even a walk around the block can help. Last of all, pay attention to your nutrition. In this day and age, you are bound to face stress on a daily basis. Feeding your body the nutrients it needs helps it to handle the physical reactions to stress without becoming ill.
I also recommend ItWorks Confianza™. This naturally based supplement increases your energy levels while reducing stress and fatigue. Its special blend of herbs was developed to provide a safe way to enhance your ability to cope with a stressful life.

Take a Deep Breath!
Do you know what’s just as important to your health as eating good foods, drinking pure water and exercise? Breathing fresh air. Now that winter is upon us, it’s not always so easy to get outside and breathe fresh air. I still recommend that you try! However, if you are spending more time indoors than out, then take time to practice deep breathing.
Every cell in your body requires oxygen every second of the day. Oxygen is your cells’ number one nutrient. Proper oxygen delivery to every cell of your body is absolutely essential, which makes all body functions breathing related. Some experts believe oxygen deficiency is the single greatest cause of all disease. Deep breathing:
Provides your cells with the oxygen they require to function well and stay healthy.
Helps pulls the lymphatic fluid throughout your immune system. Cancer, infection, and diseases of every sort hate oxygen, so fight them off by taking a deep breath of fresh air.
Enhances detoxification by increasing your body’s rate of toxic elimination by as much as fifteen times the normal rate.
Combats stress. Try this: Breathe in for four seconds, and then hold it for four seconds. Breathe out slowly. You just relieved stress. You can do that anytime, anywhere.
Breathing fresh air leaves no room for smoking. If you’re a smoker, did you know that in just two years from the time you stop smoking, 80 percent of the negative changes in your lungs will disappear? And further down the road, almost all of smoking’s negative effects on your respiratory system will be gone.
You can quit for about 79 cents. Buy a little squeeze bottle of lemon juice at the grocery store. Each and every time you crave a cigarette, put that little bottle in your mouth and give it a good squeeze. The shock will “reset” your system—literally. As your taste buds react to the lemon juice, you’ll forget all about your nicotine urge. It will also provide some negative conditioning. Kicking the nicotine habit will save you money and save your health, not to mention the health of those around you.
Don't miss a day of taking your ItWorks Greens. Greens helps keep your body alkaline and an alkalized body increases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. The result is greater oxygenation of your entire body for a healthier you. Breathe deep and oxygenate!
Stress is a frequently overlooked factor that can create big problems for your physical health. In fact, it can be one of the biggest threats to your immune system.
Our bodies deal with tremendous amounts of stress on a daily basis—whether it’s the physical stress from daily activities, emotional stress from difficult experiences, or even environmental stress from the toxins around us.
How would you like to have confidence in your body’s ability to handle these pressures, safely and naturally? Now you can with this amazing, naturally based solution: It’s called Confianza.
Confianza is a unique supplement that helps improve your muscle performance and allows you to recover more quickly after exercise or physical labor. It will also help improve short and long term memory, increase your energy levels, and help reduce stress and fatigue. Its special blend of herbs was developed specifically to enhance your ability to cope with a stressful life.
Confianza's proprietary blend of herbs includes many ingredients called adaptogens. Adaptogens are natural substances that work through the adrenal glands to produce adjustments in the body that help combat stress and increase your resistance to it. These ingredients in Confianza can help restore balance within your body, helping you to cope with the stresses in your life, whether they are physical, environmental, or emotional.*

Obesity is absolutely an epidemic in today’s society. How do you fight the fat? The answer—Fat Fighter.
Fat Fighter has NeOpuntia which is a unique cactus ingredient that traps up to 30% of the fat from a meal. You simply take Fat Fighter during or right after a “fatty” meal and it traps the fat, removing it naturally from your body. We all have times when we don’t eat as well as we should. Fat Fighter is scientifically proven to help fight the fat.
Recent research has shown that the unique fiber in NeOpuntia can help and improve blood profiles of fat levels. That means it can help your body decrease the bad LDL cholesterol which clogs arteries and causes problems with heart function, yet at the same time Fat Fighter also increases the good type of cholesterol—HDL, which removes the bad fats from your body and prevents plaque from forming in arteries.
The more research I have done on Fat Fighter the more I find it to be a truly an amazing product. I highly recommend it.

An Apple A Day...
You’ve heard the old adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well, I don’t want you to keep me away, but even so I must share the benefits of apples with you. Apples are another one of those God-made foods that are storehouses of essential nutrients. The World’s Healthiest Foods Web site recently named the apple its “Food of the Week.”
Nutritional Value One medium apple contains 15% of the daily value (DV) for dietary fiber, 13% DV for vitamin C and 9% DV for vitamin K. Apples are also especially rich in phytonutrients (plant nutrients), such as polyphenols. And since one medium apple has only 81 calories, apples are a nutritious low calorie addition to your Healthiest Way of Eating!
Health Benefits Apples contain both insoluble and soluble fiber, which pack a double punch that can help reduce cholesterol levels and your risk of hardening of the arteries, heart attack, and stroke. A recent meta-analysis has found apples to be one of the small number of fruits and vegetables that contributed to the significant reduction in the risk of heart disease. Apples also contain quercitin a powerful phytonutrient antioxidant, which teams up with vitamin C to bolster the body's immune system.
Apples help clean your teeth, lower your cholesterol, detoxify your body, fight against viruses and aid digestion—one large apple satisfies 30% of your daily fiber requirements. Apples prevent constipation and, when grated and added to yogurt, can relieve diarrhea. Susan and I get even more out of apples because we eat the seeds, too.

Are Your Kids Overweight?
Are your kids overweight? Then it’s time to overhaul your family’s lifestyle. A new study shows that by simply changing the foods your kids eat—and not worrying about portion sizes—will help them lose unhealthy fat.
Kids who eat lower-calorie meals won’t snack more later, as long as they are eating about the same amounts they are accustomed to.
… For four days over two weeks, researchers at Pennsylvania State University fed 26 children at a child-care center breakfast, lunch and snack, and gave them take-home dinners and snacks. The same menu was served each week, but one week the kids were given low-fat and low-sugar versions of the foods as well as more vegetables. The changes included 1 percent milk instead of whole, fruit served in juice instead of syrup, and pasta made with low-fat dairy and pureed vegetables.
The researchers wanted to know if the kids would naturally compensate for the reduced-calorie menus by eating extra amounts later in the day or the following day. But they didn’t. Instead, they ate about the same amount they had previously, consuming 400 fewer calories over the two days they were served the lower-calorie foods. “People tend to eat the same weight of food from day to day, and that’s what these kids did,” PennState nutritionist Barbara Rolls told the newspaper.
How else can you help your kids slim down? For starters, turn off the TV, hide the video gaming system on the top shelf of a dark closet and restrict computer time to homework use.
Second, totally eliminate fast food. Now you have given yourself the wonderful opportunity to eat foods made from scratch in your own kitchen. What a blessing! Keep it simple. After all, raw fruits and vegetables are easy to prepare and they are what you need most.
Take a closer look at the foods and beverages you regularly stock in your pantry. Deep-six the soda pop, white flour pastas and crackers, store-bought cookies and sweet treats, chips and additive-rich convenience foods. Donate it all to your neighborhood food pantry and get a new start.
For the perfect lifestyle change why not try FITworks! for the whole family. It’s easy, nutritious and you’ll have your very own Fit Coach to help you every step of the way.

Broccoli: God's Sunscreen
The more I learn about commercial sunscreens, the more I want to warn my patients about the dangers of overusing them. For one, sunshine is good for you. Twenty minutes in the sun on a summer’s day provides you with all the Vitamin D you need. (If you have dark skin or clothes are covering most of your body, you’ll need more time than that.)
For another, concerns have been raised about these chemicals in sunscreens which are either carcinogenic or “hormone” benders: diethanolamine, triethanolamine (DEA, TEA), padimate-o, octyl dimethyl PABA, benzophenone, oxybenzone, homosalate, octyl-methoxycinnamate (octinoxate), salicylates and parabens. Well, here’s some good news. Researchers have found that broccoli sprout extract can ward off UV rays. U.S. researchers find applying an extract of broccoli sprouts may help protect skin against the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation.
The study, published in Proceedings of the NationalAcademy of Sciences, says the extract works inside cells by boosting the production of a network of protective enzymes that defend against ultraviolet radiation damage. The effect lasts for several days, even after the extract is no longer present on or in the skin.
Personally, I like wearing my broccoli on the inside. Susan, the kids and I love chomping on it raw so we get all the wonderful nutrients that God created. Meanwhile, even though summer is past, we’re still getting outdoors for fresh air and sunshine! I hope you are, too. It’s good for you!
If you and you’re family aren’t getting all the veggies that your body needs for optimal health, try our It’s Greens. It’s Greens helps to boost your immune system, alkalize your body and tastes great too.
